Synopsis[]
Mr. Snuffleupagus is rollerskating around the street. He says he is having a skating party for his birthday, and Big Bird is one of his invited guests. However, he loses control and crashes into an aluminum trash can, denting it in the process, and also breaking his skates. Maria says the trash can he dented is hers. Oscar the Grouch states that maybe next time Snuffy can crash into his trash can.
Big Bird brings the broken items to the Fix-It Shop, but Maria claims that both items are beyond repair. Big Bird is worried that there will be no skating party and Snuffy is downtrodden that he'll be the only one not skating. Suddenly, Big Bird discovers in a newspaper that there are Snuffleupagus-sized skates in ABCD Mart Big Bird and Maria decide to go there to get a new trash can for Maria and a new set of skates for Snuffy.
As Big Bird and Maria head to the bus stop, she instructs him to stick together with her when shopping and if Big Bird becomes lost, he should find a store employee or call her number - 555-1234. This leads to Maria singing "That's My Number", with her daughter Gabi, Telly, and the kids joining in, while Oscar refuses to sing along. Then, the bus to ABCD Mart pulls in.
Once they arrive at ABCD Mart, Maria and Big Bird pass by three sheep, and then Little Bo Peep, who is out looking for her missing sheep. Maria asks Big Bird if he can remember what to do when shopping. She breaks into song - "Stickin' Together" - and Big Bird joins in with her. During the middle of the song, Big Bird leaves off, noticing a gumball machine. Maria says that Big Bird has wandered away from her, plus their song is not over yet. Bo Peep arrives in the scene, singing a line about her lost sheep. Everyone finishes the song together.
Big Bird and Maria find a man with a submarine sandwich. The man eats some of it so Big Bird and Maria can find the correct size for Snuffy's skates. After that, they find the skates and trash can.
With the new skates and trash can bought, they head to the checkout. Big Bird plays with one of the skates, but he accidentally lets it run away. He chases it around the store. Finally, it bumps into a ball display. By the time Big Bird catches it, he discovers that he is no longer at the checkout and appears to be lost. Just when it's time to go back to Sesame Street, Maria discovers that Big Bird has wandered away again! The two sing about being apart from each other in a parody of West Side Story's "Maria".
Later, Maria finds something yellow, thinking it's Big Bird. As she runs to it, it turns out to be a big yellow feather on a woman's (Justine Johnston) hat. Meanwhile, Big Bird suddenly remembers Maria's words: "if he gets lost, he should find a store worker. They have a tag with a star that reads 'ABCD Mart'." Big Bird finds a worker (Frances McDormand) and identifies it by her nametag with the ABCD Mart logo. Big Bird tells Frances that he is lost from Maria, but thinks Maria is lost. Frances asks Big Bird for his name and the person he is shopping with and his close relative's phone number (Granny Bird, 555-6789). Frances says she'll find Maria in no time. At the store intercom phone, Frances calls Maria to report to the customer service desk.
- A boy gets lost in the mail, and a security guard shows him how to use a map Artist: ArtistMike (First: Episode 2874)
- Captain Elmo Cousteau searches for the treasure of the missing soap. He encounters a policeman fishy, who shows him the way to the tresaure and back home. (First: Episode 2637)
In no time at all, Maria and Big Bird are happily reunited. Maria says she's glad that Big Big has remembered what to do when he got lost. Big Bird says he thought she's the one who was lost. Maria says they have to get out of the store and they have a skating party to go to.
Back on Sesame Street, Big Bird gives Snuffy the new set of skates. Snuffy thanks Big Bird for the present. Maria brings out a giant cake with candles, and everyone sings "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and wishes Snuffy a happy birthday. Snuffy lets out a giant blow from his snuffle, sending Maria rolling backwards and crashing into the new trash can. It's dented, but at least she saved the cake.
In ABCD Mart, Frances gives a message to grown-ups about what to do when their kids get lost.
